recycling
Even once all materials have been reused where possible, there is still a large volume of materials that is destined for landfill. By recycling these things we can change this wasteful habit and move towards a more sustainable future. By recycling things such as paper, glass, plastics, aswell as batteries and light globes we can reduce the burden on landfill and resources. We have recently introduced the 3 bin recycling system in all our classrooms, as well as on the oval, to allow staff and students to recycle with ease. Food scraps will also be recycled through worm farms and compost bins, allowing us to produce amazing fertiliser for our school veggie patch.
3 bin system
3 bin system in all classrooms
All classrooms are encouraged to use the new 3 bin recycling system that has been set up in each classroom. Students will be responsible for weighing the bins each week to monitor their recycling and raise their awareness. There will be competitions between local schools in the area to see who recycles the highest percentage of their waste. Monthly prises will be given for students in the most efficent classrooms. The staff will also be going head to head with other school staffrooms in the area.
We have also put a large 3 bin recycling bin system in the playgrounds to make recycling at lunchtime an easy option for all students whilst outside.
As well a the 3 bin system, we now have recycling bins for flourescent globes and batteries in the main office. Parents are also encouraged to use these facilities if it makes their own recycling more convenient.

composting and food waste
worm farm for composting
We now have a couple of worm farms behind the school that students and staff can use for their food waste. This is a great way to get quality fertiliser for our schools veggie patch without using fertilisers, and its free! Science students will be also monitoring the benefits of this fertiliser by comparing it to a test patch that just gets water. This will allow the benefits to be measured and help in the realisation of the efectiveness of this strategy.
Students in the cooking classes will be able to reap the rewards of the luscious school veggie patch as they will use herbs and veggies from the garden in the dishes that they cook. They will also be responsible for putting all food scraps in the worm farms and the compost bins after class to continue to utilize this waste and reduce landfill.
We would like to give a big thanks to Barry from Barry's Hardware for donating the worm farms to the school.
