reuse
monthly swap day
Reusing materials is the best way to ensure we are getting the most out of the things we purchase. We have become a disposable society and this trend must be reversed to ensure we are sustainable for the future. By reusing things whenever possible we are reducing the use of energy for production of these items, and also minimising the burden on landfills. By encouraging reuse of things within our school we are teaching students how they can easily do this in their everyday lives, both now and in the future. As staff we can do a few small things to encourage this and make it an easy option to choose.
We all know the saying that one mans trash is another mans treasure! Thats why we will be setting up a second hand /swap service for both staff and students. Here they can Swap books, movies, games, toys, clothes amongst themselves. This will be done one day a month in the school hall during lunchtime. Parents will be helping out by attending the swap days, and kids can post their items for swap/sale on the school community website. Any donated items will be sold for a bargain and proceeds will go to charity.

scrap paper tubs
art room scrap paper system
We are setting up scrap paper tubs in all classroms and also the staff room. We often need scrap paper for various things, and this way we dont have to use new paper in these situations. There will also be scrap paper bins next to all photocopiers so that paper that has only been printed on one side can be reused and not wasted. This will also help us to acheive our 30% reduction in paper use in the school. The art room already uses a scrap paper system for coloured paper as it is often used for small pieces and the rest of the sheets are now saved for re-use. This has already proved to be a great sucess.
recycled sculptures
Packaging is one of the biggest burdens on both landfill and our resources. We will be aiming to show ways that we can turn this burden into a valuable resource. Reuse of all materials will be encouraged where possible . Our art students will be making sculptures with re-claimed materials each semester. There will be a competition amongst other local schools at the end of the year, where these sculpures will be displayed.
Students involved in the recycling of materials will be responsible for removing items that could be used in these sculptures, before emptying the 3 recycling bins, as instructed by the art teacher.
The benefits of these strategies to reuse materials within the school will be seen in the reduction of waste throughout the school. This will be measured by the students under the recycling program, and will demonstrate to students how waste reduction strategies are intertwined and can have an ongoing positive impact when operating together, through our holistic waste management strategy.
